The Mormon Church I.G.I

The International Genealogical Index (I.G.I.) has been produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). They have researched and indexed millions of parish records and the index contains baptisms and marriages but NO burials. Up to the latest edition in 1998 the index contains records up to about 1885 but many millions earlier. Not all parishes are contained, and some non-conformist church records are not in, but the index is very extensive. Most local record offices, studies libraries, etc. have microfilm, microfiche and possibly CD based copies of the indexes and they can be searched there for free.

As with any transcribed data you should always refer back to the original record should you find an ancestor listed in the index, errors do occur. This database is a very important addition to the amateur genealogist researching his family history, and provided it is studied with due care it is invaluable.
